What is grammar & usage,
and why should you care?
Grammar is the structure and system of a language,
or the function of words and the way words are put together to make sentences.
Usage is the customary manner in which a language is spoken or written.
To put it simply, grammar is the study of the structure of the language and
usage is the practice of using the established rules about the structure
to communicate in a way that all speakers of the language understand.
So, one reason to know grammar and usage rules is for efficient communication. But there's more.
Did you know that employers and personnel directors connect poor grammatical usage with low intelligence and lack of competence? Yet, grammar knowledge has nothing to do with intelligence.
It is more likely that people who use "poor grammar" do so out of habit rather than out of low intelligence.
And just as habits can be formed, they can be broken.
